James Polk

To celebrate the 160th anniversary of Palos Community Consolidated District 118, our class is researching life in the 1840s. The topic I chose was James Polk.

At the age of twenty-eight James Polk married Sarah Childress in the year of 1824.  Sarah was only twenty when she married James.  They were married for twenty-five years.  Since James was a little boy he always wanted to be in politics.

James Polk had accomplished many achievements throughout his life.  He began his political career as governor of Tennessee.  He also was a member of the House of Representatives.  His greatest achievement was becoming the eleventh president in 1845.  James Polk is known for being a U.S president.

James Polk grew up in North Carolina.  He received his education from the University of North Carolina, graduating with honors in 1818.  James Polk affected many areas during his time of being a president.  For example, he was involved with Texas, California, and the North.

James Polk was born November 2, 1795.  At the age of fifty James became a president.  He was a president for four years.  Polk, leaving office with his health undermined from hard work, died in June 1849.  James was buried in Nashville, Tennessee.

James Polk was the last of the Jacksonians to sit in the White House.  Many people thought that James Polk was one of the better presidents, others thought he could of help contribute to abolishing slavery.  Though he did nothing to stop slavery, he was still the last strong president before the Civil War.

From the information i have gathered, I would have to say, Polk was a great president and was true to his country!
